Suffolk Is Bigger Than It Looks

Suffolk is the largest city by land area in Virginia, at roughly 400 square miles, and that size means it contains very different places. Downtown Suffolk has a historic Main Street and older homes. North Suffolk, including Harbour View and the Bennett’s Creek area, is suburban and closest to the rest of Hampton Roads. South and west of town, communities such as Chuckatuck, Holland and Whaleyville are rural, with farms, long roads and large lots.

Suffolk is also known for peanuts: the Planters Peanut company, with its Mr. Peanut mascot, started in the city in the early 1900s. That agricultural history still shows in the landscape, along with the Great Dismal Swamp, which covers a large part of the southern end of the city and keeps much of the ground wet.

The work reflects that range. In the suburbs, homeowners want fences, decks and exterior updates in houses from the 1990s and 2000s. In rural areas, projects are larger and more spread out, and they involve decks, siding repair and roof work on bigger houses with outbuildings and long property lines.

Services We Offer in Suffolk

Decks

Larger Suffolk lots make decks and covered patios a natural fit, built to resist wet ground and shade from mature trees.

Fences

Rural and suburban lots both use fences, from privacy runs behind a house to longer lines across open ground.

Siding

Older farmhouses and downtown homes often have wood or vinyl siding that needs repair around windows and doors.

Roof Repair

Trees on rural lots drop branches and debris onto roofs, and clogged valleys cause leaks.

Local Considerations for Contracting in Suffolk

  • Wetlands and the Great Dismal Swamp. Southern Suffolk has wet soil and protected wetlands that affect foundations, footings and what you can build.
  • Wells and septic. Rural lots often have wells and drainfields. Location matters for decks, fences and equipment access.
  • Distance. Suffolk is large and we are based in Hampton, so travel to the rural parts affects scheduling. We tell you upfront.
  • Trees and storm debris. Mature trees on large lots mean more roof and gutter maintenance and more cleanup after storms.
  • Permits. The City of Suffolk issues building permits for decks, roofs and structural work.

Contractor in Suffolk: Common Questions

Do you work in the rural parts of Suffolk?

Yes, when the project justifies the drive. Suffolk includes farmland, Chuckatuck, Holland, Whaleyville and Driver as well as the suburban north end. Tell us the address and the project and we will say how we would schedule it.

What should I know about wells, septic and building on larger lots?

Rural Suffolk lots often have wells and septic systems and sometimes drainfields or wetlands. Deck footings, fence lines and yard work must avoid those. Know where they are and share it with us before we plan the work.

How does the Great Dismal Swamp affect building in Suffolk?

The swamp and its surrounding wetlands cover a large part of southern Suffolk. Soil there stays wet and building near wetlands can be restricted, so we check conditions and rules for lots near the swamp before work.

Do you serve North Suffolk and Harbour View?

Yes. North Suffolk, including Harbour View, is the most suburban part of the city and the closest to Hampton Roads. Homes there are mostly from the 1990s and later.
