Updating the Rooms Between the Kitchen and the Bath

Interior remodeling is the work that does not fit neatly into a kitchen or bathroom project: the staircase with worn treads and a wobbly rail, the dining room with tired floors, the hallway where the trim was never replaced and the wall that a past repair left patched. It is also where a house starts to feel like yours.

A lot of homes in Hampton and the surrounding cities were built between the 1940s and the 1970s with plaster walls, narrow doorways and floors that have settled. Good interior work respects that: it levels and repairs before finishing, keeps what is sound and replaces what is not.

The two examples on this page show the range. One is a staircase with natural-wood treads, white risers and a white railing running down to a hardwood hall floor. The other is a dining room with wood floors, fresh walls and a ceiling fan overhead.

Interior Projects We Have Finished

When It Is Time to Remodel the Inside

Squeaky or loose stairs and railings

A moving rail is a safety issue, not only a cosmetic one. Treads and balusters can be replaced without rebuilding the whole staircase.

Floors that dip or creak

Soft spots and slopes need to be fixed before new flooring, or the problem simply comes back.

Patched walls and cracked plaster

Repeated patching means a conversation about repairing properly or recovering the wall.

Doorways and trim that never matched

Mixed baseboards and door casings make a renovated room look unfinished.

A room that no longer fits how you live

A closed-off dining room, an unused den or a hallway nobody needs can all be reworked.

How an Interior Remodel Goes

  1. Scope the roomsWe walk the house with you, list what changes in each room and flag anything structural, like a wall you want to open.
  2. Protect and prepareFloors and furniture are covered, dust barriers go up and utilities in the work area are identified.
  3. Repair before finishingSubfloor, framing, drywall and plaster are repaired and leveled so finishes land on solid surfaces.
  4. Install and finishFlooring, trim, doors, railings and paint go in a sensible order so nothing is damaged by the next trade.
  5. WalkthroughWe review each room with you, correct what needs it and clean up.

What Changes the Price of Interior Remodeling

Interior projects range from a single stair rebuild to several rooms at once, so the quote is built room by room.

  • Number of rooms and square footage. More rooms usually means a better rate per room, but more material and finishing time overall.
  • Condition of what is under the surface. Uneven floors, water-stained subfloor or failing plaster add repair work before finishes.
  • Structural changes. Opening a wall may require a beam and a permit, which adds scope.
  • Material choices. Hardwood, engineered wood, vinyl plank, trim profiles and railing styles all move the budget.
  • Phasing. Doing rooms one at a time takes longer but can fit a family budget better than a single large job.

Why Choose 757 Contracting for Interior Work

Interior projects are the ones people live through, so how a crew behaves in your home matters as much as the finish. Johnny Mora runs each job himself, which means one person who knows the plan, protects the house and answers when something comes up.

We are a general contractor, not a single-trade shop, so a project that mixes stairs, trim, a few walls and floors does not need three different companies.

Where We Offer Interior Remodeling

We take interior remodeling projects across Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk and the rest of the Hampton Roads area, including older homes where repairs come before finishes.

Interior Remodeling FAQ

What counts as interior remodeling?

Anything that changes the inside of the house without adding square footage: replacing a staircase or railing, updating floors, trim and doors, repairing and refinishing walls, rebuilding a room after a repair or opening a doorway. Kitchens and bathrooms are covered on their own pages; this one is for everything between them.

Can you remodel one room while we live in the house?

Yes. We close the work area off with plastic and floor protection, keep the path to the door clear and clean up at the end of each day. Larger jobs such as stairs or floors across several rooms need more planning, and we will tell you if a room has to be out of use.

How do you handle walls that may be load-bearing?

We never assume. Before any wall comes down we check which way the joists run and what sits above. If the wall is carrying load, the opening needs a properly sized beam and temporary support, and we explain what that means for the scope and the price before work starts.

Our house has old plaster and uneven floors. Is that a problem?

It is common in older Hampton Roads homes and it is manageable. Plaster can be repaired or covered, and uneven floors are leveled before new flooring goes in. We point out these conditions at the walkthrough so there are no surprises on day one.
